Anyone searching "apartment for rent thonglor" will find rents that make little sense until they check the walk to the station. Our 29 Thonglor homes run from ฿51,700 to ฿299,000 a month, and the three closest to BTS Thong Lo, 50 metres away, include the dearest two-bedroom we let in the area. The cheapest two-bedroom is 1.4 km from the same station.

Thong Lo is Sukhumvit Soi 55. It runs north from Sukhumvit Road, where the BTS station stands, up to New Phetchaburi Road, and our homes are spread along it and the sois either side. How far each of our Thonglor homes is from the BTS

Twenty-one of the 29 give a walk to BTS Thong Lo. Two give BTS Phrom Phong instead, the station one stop west, and six give no station at all. Here they are by the walk, with the lowest rent in each group:

Read down the table and the rent does not simply fall as the walk gets longer. The two homes at 1.4 km are the cheapest in Thonglor, but the four at 1.6 km start higher than the cheapest home at 440 or 750 metres. What changes along the soi is the kind of building, and that is what the rest of this guide sorts out.

50 metres: the three new serviced homes at the station

The three homes nearest BTS Thong Lo are listed as new, serviced and 50 metres from the station: a studio at ฿126,000 a month, a 52 m² one-bedroom at ฿141,800 and a 95 m² two-bedroom with two bathrooms at ฿236,300. That two-bedroom is the highest rent for a two-bedroom in our Thonglor list, and ฿97,700 a month more than a serviced two-bedroom with breakfast 700 metres up the road.

If you want to be that close to the station for less, look outside the Thonglor list. Our 80 m² two-bedroom 200 metres from BTS Thong Lo is filed under Central Bangkok on the site and costs ฿66,800 a month. It has two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a large balcony, housekeeping with linen changes three times a week, water, and an electricity allowance of ฿6,400 a month. That is the same rent as our cheapest Thonglor two-bedroom, for a walk seven times shorter.

440 metres: one building on Soi 59, six sizes

Six of our Thonglor homes are in one serviced building on Sukhumvit Soi 59, a short way east of Thong Lo and 440 metres from the station. The same things come with the rent in all six: housekeeping three times a week with a linen change, Wi-Fi, water, one parking space, a washing machine, and use of the pool, gym, steam and sauna rooms and a kids' playroom. A scheduled shuttle runs to the BTS at Thong Lo and Ekkamai. Breakfast is not included; it costs ฿550 per person.

Electricity is included up to a monthly cap that rises with the size of the flat, and anything above it is charged at ฿7 a kilowatt hour plus VAT. The cap for each size is in the table.

The names matter here. An Executive two- or three-bedroom is a Premier apartment joined to an extra bedroom with its own bathroom. A Premier with the same number of bedrooms is a single flat, five square metres larger; the three-bedroom Premier has city views on two sides and a kitchen island. Those five metres cost ฿34,500 a month more for two bedrooms and ฿80,500 a month more for three. If the extra bedroom is for a child or a visitor, the Executive layout does the same job for less.

700 to 750 metres: serviced homes, two with breakfast

Six homes sit 700 to 750 metres from BTS Thong Lo, around a ten-minute walk. Two of them include breakfast, which none of the Soi 59 flats do:

• 5 star studio, ฿94,900, 750 m: the lowest rent in this group
• 5 star home, 49 m², ฿97,900, 750 m
• 1 BR, serviced, ฿118,600, 750 m
• 5 star home, serviced, with breakfast, ฿122,200, 700 m
• 5 star 2 BR, serviced, with breakfast, ฿138,600, 700 m
• 2 BR with a city view, ฿157,200, 750 m

For a couple or a small family, the two-bedroom with breakfast at ฿138,600 is the one to set against the station homes. It is ฿97,700 a month less than the 95 m² two-bedroom at 50 metres, and ฿33,900 less than the 95 m² Executive at 440 metres, with breakfast on top. Its floor area is not listed, so ask for it before you compare the three.

On Thonglor the walk to the BTS tells you less than the building does. Read the distance, then read what the rent includes, before you compare two prices.

1.2 to 1.6 km: the cheapest rents, and some that are not

The two cheapest homes in Thonglor are both 1.4 km from BTS Thong Lo. One is a 32 m² high-rise condo at ฿51,700 a month, our lowest Thonglor rent. The other is a two-bedroom high-rise flat at ฿66,800, with one bathroom and room for three. At 1.4 km the station is close to a 20-minute walk, so plan on a motorbike taxi or a taxi for the run to the BTS.

The four homes listed at 1.6 km are priced differently. All four are serviced and carry OD in the title: a studio at ฿98,300, a one-bedroom at ฿100,800, a two-bedroom at ฿170,100 and a three-bedroom at ฿201,600. That three-bedroom is the cheapest three-bedroom in Thonglor, ฿16,900 a month less than the 135 m² Executive at 440 metres.

Two more homes give BTS Phrom Phong, 1.2 km away, as their nearest station: a 95 m² serviced two-bedroom at ฿170,100 and a 110 m² two-bedroom at ฿207,900. Both list their size, which makes them easier to compare than most two-bedrooms on this page.

No station listed: ask before you book

Six listings give no station, so the walk is the first thing to ask about. They include three of our five cheapest Thonglor homes, and the two named for Bangkok Hospital:

Bangkok Hospital is off New Phetchaburi Road, at the far end of Thong Lo from the BTS. If regular appointments there matter more to you than the train, those two homes are the ones to ask about first.

How to choose your end of Thonglor

• Decide how you will reach the station. Under 500 metres is an easy walk; from 1.4 km, budget for a motorbike taxi, or ask whether the building runs a shuttle, as the Soi 59 one does.
• Check what each rent includes: housekeeping, breakfast, electricity. The listings differ, and the lower rent is not always the cheaper month.
• Ask for the floor area when a listing gives none. Fifteen of our 29 Thonglor homes list a size.
• Read the station on the listing, not the area name. Two Thonglor homes are nearer BTS Phrom Phong, and one of our closest homes to BTS Thong Lo is filed under Central Bangkok.
