A tree-lined side street off Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok in the morning, with condominium towers on both sides and the BTS Skytrain viaduct crossing the far end of the street.

If you are searching for an apartment for rent sukhumvit soi 8, you are looking at the south side of Sukhumvit Road, between BTS Nana and BTS Asok. We do not let a home on Soi 8 itself. The nearest we have are three serviced flats in one building one soi east, off Soi 10, on the same side of the road: 70 to 89 m², from ฿126,000 to ฿201,600 a month, 450 metres from BTS Asok and 600 metres from MRT Sukhumvit.

Staying on Soi 8's side of the road matters more than it sounds, and it is the main reason to look at this building before the larger flats across the road by BTS Nana. Below is what each of the three homes gives you, what the rent covers, and when crossing the road is the better deal.

Even numbers south: where Soi 8 sits

Sukhumvit's side streets are numbered by side. Odd numbers run off the north side of the road and even numbers off the south, so Soi 8 sits between Soi 6 and Soi 10, with Soi 11 and Soi 13 facing it across the main road. On this stretch Sukhumvit Road is wide and busy, with the BTS viaduct overhead, and crossing it on foot means a footbridge, a signalled crossing or the stairs through a station.

That is why we name the building off Soi 10 first. From Soi 8 it is one side street along, on the same pavement, with no main road in between. If you have friends, an office or a favourite restaurant on Soi 8, you can walk there without crossing six lanes of traffic.

The three homes off Soi 10

All three are in one building and share its facilities: a salt-water swimming pool, a fitness centre, a sauna, a steam room, a children's play area, meeting rooms and a Thai restaurant on site. Each comes with housekeeping and a linen change three times a week, and electricity and water are included in the rent.

2 BR, 89 m², 4 guests฿201,600Two bathrooms; king and queen bedrooms; balconyBTS Asok 450 m · MRT Sukhumvit 600 m

The building is set up for people who work from home. All three homes are listed with 200 Mbps internet, and the meeting rooms downstairs are there for the days a call needs a proper table rather than the sofa.

What each extra baht buys

The rents climb by ฿12,600 and then by ฿63,000. Divide each one by its floor area and the picture is clearer:

Between the two one-bedrooms, ฿12,600 a month buys six more square metres, a private balcony and a washer with a dryer. If you are staying long enough to do a weekly wash, or you want somewhere to sit outside in the evening, that is the one to book. If you mainly need a good bed, a fast line and a bath, the 70 m² city-view one-bedroom does the job for less, and it has a walk-in closet and a sofa bed for a visitor.

The two-bedroom is the dearest of the three per square metre. What it gives you is a second bedroom with its own shower room, so two people sharing get a door and a bathroom each. Four guests is the listed maximum, and split four ways the rent comes to ฿50,400 a head.

Off Soi 10 you are paying for the building and the side of the road, not for floor space. Across the road at Nana it is the other way round.

When crossing the road is the better deal

Across Sukhumvit Road, on the Soi 11 side, we let five much larger flats 500 metres from BTS Nana and 800 metres from MRT Sukhumvit. They start at ฿151,200 a month for 69 m² and run to 213 m². The one to compare with the Soi 10 two-bedroom is the 150 m² two-bedroom near BTS Nana at ฿189,000 a month.

2 BR, 150 m², by BTS Nana฿189,000Across the main road; dining table for eight; balcony over a gardenBTS Nana 500 m · MRT Sukhumvit 800 m

The Nana flat is ฿12,600 a month cheaper and 61 square metres larger. Its rent also includes electricity and water, with housekeeping three times a week and linen changed twice. What you give up is the side of the road, an extra 200 metres to the MRT, and the Soi 10 building's sauna and meeting rooms. If there are two or more of you and you want room, cross the road. If one of you works from home and you want to stay on Soi 8's side, stay where you are.

Getting around from Soi 10

The building sits by Asok, where the BTS Sukhumvit Line meets the MRT Blue Line at Sukhumvit station. That puts two lines within a short walk, and you can choose whichever suits each journey rather than changing trains.

In practice, the Skytrain takes you west to Phloen Chit, Chit Lom and Siam, and east along Sukhumvit to Phrom Phong and Thong Lo. If your office or your children's school is on the Blue Line, the 600 metres to MRT Sukhumvit is the walk you will do every day, so do it once at rush hour before you book.

If ฿126,000 is more than you want to spend

The Soi 10 building starts at ฿126,000. Near BTS Asok, a studio with a city view starts at ฿81,900 and a one-bedroom with a skyline view is ฿94,500, both listed 500 metres from BTS Asok and 750 metres from MRT Sukhumvit. They are smaller and not in the Soi 10 building, so check the internet speed and the walk to Soi 8 before you compare them, but you keep both train lines.

Before you book

Every home here is let by the calendar month, with no platform or booking fees. Ask us for the exact building before you view, check which way the bedroom faces and how high the floor is, and walk from the flat to the station at the hour you will actually commute.
