The elevated Skytrain track running along Sukhumvit Road in eastern Bangkok on a clear morning, with a train on the viaduct, traffic on the road below and residential towers stretching away along the line.

Look up apartments for rent On Nut Bangkok and you get the towers around a single Skytrain station, which is a narrower search than it needs to be. We let four furnished homes filed under On Nut, from ฿54,200 a month, and thirteen more within one stop of it on the same line. The useful question is not which On Nut flat, but which of three stations: Phra Khanong, On Nut or Bang Chak.

Every home here is furnished and let by the calendar month, with a one-month minimum and no platform or booking fees. The short version: On Nut gives you the shortest walk to the platform for the money. One stop in, at Phra Khanong, about the same rent buys close to twice the floor area, and a much longer walk.

Seventeen homes along three stations

On Nut sits between Phra Khanong and Bang Chak on the BTS Sukhumvit Line, five stops east of Asok. Our listings file the homes around these three stations under four different area names, On Nut, Sukhumvit, Rama 4 and Ekkamai, which is why a search by district never shows them side by side. Grouped by the station you would actually walk to, they look like this.

The spread at each station tells you what it is for. Around On Nut the rents are low and the walks are short, but the flats are small. Around Phra Khanong the walks are long and the flats are large. Bang Chak, one stop further out, has a single loft at the same rent as the two Sukhumvit 48 duplexes.

On Nut itself: the short walk

Three of our homes are 350 metres from BTS On Nut. The 38 m² one-bedroom at ฿54,200 has a separate bedroom with a queen bed, a balcony and a kitchenette with a stove for light cooking. The 56 m² two-bedroom at ฿60,500 adds a second bedroom, a second full bathroom and a small workstation. The 72 m² three-bedroom duplex at ฿103,300 sleeps six, with three bathrooms and its own living room.

All three include electricity and water in the rent outright, with housekeeping three times a week, linen changed twice, and a pool and gym in the building. Three hundred and fifty metres is three or four minutes on foot, with a hypermarket beside the station and food on the pavement on both sides of Sukhumvit Road, so the daily errands sit on the way home. What that walk is like in the heat and the rain is in our guide to what the 350 metres are like.

One stop in: what Phra Khanong buys instead

Ten of our homes are a walk from BTS Phra Khanong, one stop towards town. Six are filed under Rama 4 and listed 900 metres from the station, from a studio at ฿46,600 to a 180 m² three-bedroom at ฿151,200. In the middle are three 70 m² one-bedrooms at ฿65,500, ฿68,000 and ฿75,600, the last with a jacuzzi in the bathroom. The 70 m² one-bedroom at ฿65,500 has a fully equipped kitchen, an open-plan living and dining area, housekeeping six times a week and electricity and water included.

The other four are filed under Ekkamai but sit 750 metres from Phra Khanong: a 49 m² studio at ฿61,700, an 80 m² one-bedroom and a 94 m² two-bedroom at ฿88,200 each, and a 140 m² two-bedroom at ฿119,700. They share one building with high ceilings, marble bathrooms, a saltwater pool, a sauna and a children's playroom. Water is included and electricity is covered up to an allowance stated for each flat.

The pattern is plain. At On Nut a square metre costs roughly ฿1,080 to ฿1,430 a month; around Phra Khanong most of the larger flats come in under ฿950. The 70 m² one-bedroom on Rama IV Road is ฿11,300 a month more than the 38 m² flat at On Nut, and for that you get 32 more square metres, a full kitchen rather than a kitchenette, and housekeeping six days a week instead of three. What it costs you is 550 more metres each way to the platform.

On Nut sells you the walk. Phra Khanong sells you the floor. Decide which of the two you will notice every day.

How long each walk is, and what it does to the bills

Eleven minutes on a flat pavement is nothing in January and a change of shirt in April. Most people living 750 metres or more from a station walk it in the morning and take a motorbike taxi back in the afternoon heat. If you commute every weekday, count that into the rent. Fares and the route map are published by BTS, and Phra Khanong saves you one stop on every journey into town.

The bills are the other difference. The three On Nut homes and the Rama 4 one-bedrooms include electricity and water outright. The Sukhumvit 48 one-bedrooms and the Bang Chak loft cover electricity to ฿3,000 a month and water to ฿500. The building filed under Ekkamai states an electricity allowance for each flat: ฿4,550 on the studio, ฿5,600 on the 80 m² one-bedroom, ฿7,520 on the 94 m² two-bedroom and ฿11,200 on the 140 m² two-bedroom. Ask how anything above an allowance is charged; the city tariff is published by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.

Which station, by household

The family case shows the trade most clearly. The 94 m² two-bedroom by Phra Khanong is ฿15,100 a month less than the On Nut three-bedroom and 22 square metres larger. It has one bedroom fewer, a longer walk, and electricity up to an allowance rather than included. For four people who can share a room, it is the better flat. For six, only the On Nut duplex and the large Rama 4 three-bedroom will do.

Before you book

Ask for the floor area where a listing does not show it; the Rama 4 studio and the Sukhumvit 48 two-bedroom are two that do not. Ask whether electricity is included outright or up to an allowance, and how much that allowance is. Then walk from the building to the platform once, at the hour you would actually commute, before you decide that 900 metres is fine.

All four On Nut homes, with photographs and monthly rates, are on the On Nut page. The Phra Khanong homes are under Rama 4 and Ekkamai. Send us your dates and how many people are coming, and we will tell you which of the seventeen is free.
